Helicon Learn
Helicon Learn is our web platform for mastery-based learning. It maps each subject as a set of topics and shows which topics build on others, so it can find what a learner already knows and give practice on the next topic they are ready for. It is for students who learn on their own or in a class, and for teachers who follow their students' progress.
The map
Each subject is a map of topics. A line between two topics shows that one comes before the other. The map lets Helicon Learn place each learner, and it shows the learner why a topic comes next.
The next topic
Helicon Learn gives practice on a topic once the learner has mastered the topics before it. Practice there is new enough to teach something and close enough to what the learner knows to succeed.
Mastery
A topic counts as mastered when the learner's answers show it, not after a set time. Only then do the topics that depend on it open, so each new topic rests on topics the learner knows.
Practice
Each activity is short and asks the learner to tap, sort, listen or build. An AI tutor answers questions about the activity on the screen.
For students
- Students join a class with a code from their teacher, or learn on their own.
- Each student's map shows what they have mastered and what comes next.
- An account is free. Students can also start without one, and their progress moves to an account if they make one later.
For teachers
- A teacher makes a class for one subject and shares a 6-character code or a link.
- The teacher sees each student's mastered topics, recent practice, and who needs help.
- Teachers set assignments on the topics they choose, and goals for the class or for one student. There is no gradebook.
Subjects
Three subjects are open for practice. We open each of the others when its activities are ready.
