About Helicon
Education is meant to build the agency of learners. Beyond giving students information, they should learn how to teach themselves about their own interests, identify problems in their lives and communities, and create practical solutions.
AI can enhance agency for both learners and educators. For learners, AI improves access to learning new skills and supports their creative process as they innovate. For teachers, AI enables stronger pedagogies like goal-oriented learning, reducing preparation time and allowing more creative teaching.
Helicon AI Institute is a strong proponent of "goal-oriented learning"—encouraging students to determine problems they want to solve or questions they want to answer. This approach builds student agency by improving communication, teamwork, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
One major barrier to implementing research-backed pedagogies like project-based learning, Socratic learning, and active learning is the time required for preparation and individual student attention. AI reduces these barriers, allowing teachers more space for creative, effective teaching.
These techniques are immune from "AI-cheating" because when students use AI, it can only support their progress toward their goals. We offer training for students, educators, and education leaders on using AI to build agency in learning.
